Representatives of Ray Stevenson claimed that he had died on Sunday in Italy only four days before his birthday. The Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported he had been hospitalized with a sudden illness on the island of Ischia, while in production on the film Cassino in Ischia. Ray was the Northern Irish actor who played the villainous British governor in the movie RRR, Volstagg in the Thor films and a main antagonist in the upcoming Star Wars series Ahsoka.

Ray Stevenson was a British actor known for his work in film, television, and theater. He was born on May 25, 1964, in Lisburn, Northern Ireland. Stevenson initially pursued a career in the British Army before turning to acting. After attending the Bristol Old Vic theater school and years of working in British television, he made his film debut in Paul Greengrass’s 1998 film The Theory of Flight.Stevenson gained international recognition for his portrayal of the character Titus Pullo in the HBO television series “Rome” (2005-2007). His performance in the series earned him critical acclaim and a devoted fan base.

In addition to his television work, Ray Stevenson has appeared in numerous films. Some of his notable movie roles include Dagonet in “King Arthur” (2004), Frank Castle/The Punisher in “Punisher: War Zone” (2008), Volstagg in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films “Thor” (2011), “Thor: The Dark World” (2013), and “Thor: Ragnarok” (2017), and Isaak Sirko in the television series “Dexter” (2012).

In  Performance of “Rome”: Stevenson gained widespread recognition and critical acclaim for his portrayal of the character Titus Pullo in the HBO television series “Rome” (2005-2007). His performance earned him a dedicated fan base and praise for his compelling and complex portrayal.

His family relocated to Newcastle upon Tyne and he spent much of his childhood in England.

To pay respects on Tuesday RRR director SS Rajamouli wrote on Twitter : “Just can’t believe this news. Ray brought in so much energy and vibrancy with him to the sets. It was infectious. Working with him was pure joy. My prayers are with his family. May his soul rest in peace”.

Harry Potter actor Matthew Lewis, who appeared alongside Stevenson as a child in the television film, wrote on Twitter: “This is so sad. Ray played my dad in the first thing I ever did on TV. Almost 30 years ago. A proper actor with a fascinating career and I couldn’t have dreamed of a better first experience in this ridiculous industry.”  

“Rosario Dawson” who will appear in the Ashoka series alongside Stevenson  posted on Instagram to say her co-star was a “giant of a man” whose death left her “stunned and reeling”. Meanwhile director James Gunn, who was involved in the production of the second Thor film, wrote that the late actor had been a “joy to work with.””Bear McCreary”, the composer who sound tracked the Black Sails TV series, saluted Stevenson’s “mesmerizingly unforgettable” turn as Blackbeard in the programmed. And actor “Scott Adkins”, who starred alongside Stevenson in Accident Man, sad he was “shocked and saddened by the tragic news”, adding: “I will miss you, Big Ray!”
