Following the legalization of marijuana and the increasing interest in microdosing, chocolates manufactured from magic mushrooms have evolved from dank truffles and dry caps to upscale candy bars and bonbons. But  practically every state in the US has prohibited psilocybin. It’s lurching toward legalization of various forms of medicinal usage in Colorado and Oregon, but those states will still have strict regulations. In the US, it is still illegal to sell magic mushrooms anywhere. Though branded, manufactured candy bars and bonbons have replaced the truffles created at home by a local merchant, mushroom chocolates have still advanced.

Psilocybin or Psychedelic Chocolate

A particular kind of consumable known as “psilocybin chocolate” blends chocolate with psilocybin, the hallucinogenic substance present in some mushroom species that are sometimes called “magic mushrooms.” Using this product is intended to provide the benefits of psilocybin in a more agreeable manner than eating raw mushrooms. Chocolate is mixed with either a psilocybin extract or pulverized psilocybin mushrooms to generate psilocybin chocolates. These chocolates contain varying amounts of psilocybin, so consumers can select different strengths based on their desired effects and level of experience.

The well-known hallucinogenic effects of psilocybin include mood swings, altered perceptions, and intense auditory or visual hallucinations. Depending on the dosage, the person’s mental health, and their surroundings, these effects might differ greatly. As a Schedule I drug under U.S. federal law, psilocybin is outlawed in many areas and has been explored for its therapeutic advantages, such as treating depression, anxiety, and PTSD. When consuming psychedelic chocolates, it’s important for users to be aware of the legal status in their area, potential side effects, and the importance of consuming them in a safe, controlled environment.

Effects of Psilocybin Chocolate

Changes in sense of time, powerful emotional experiences, and aural and visual hallucinations are among the altered states of consciousness that psilocybin is known to induce. Individual tolerance, the context in which they are eaten, and the dose all affect the effects. In order to hide the earthy flavor of the mushrooms and enhance the palatability and enjoyment of intake, these goods blend psilocybin with chocolate.

Types of Psilocybin Chocolate

  • Chocolate Bars: These are often segmented into smaller pieces, allowing users to control their dosage.Typically range from $20 to $50, with dosages varying from 1g to 3.5g of psilocybin mushrooms per bar.
  • Truffles: Smaller, individual servings often crafted with gourmet ingredients. These can cost between $5 to $20 per piece, depending on the dosage and quality.

Is it legal to buy or sell psilocybin chocolate ?

The active ingredient in “magic mushrooms,” psilocybin, is now mostly prohibited by federal law in the United States. Nonetheless, a few governments and localities have decriminalized the possession or use of cannabis, and some have even started to establish legal frameworks for its controlled usage, particularly for medicinal purposes. Although decriminalization implies that police would not focus their efforts on apprehending people for psilocybin possession, it does not legalize the production, sale, or purchase of psilocybin-containing chocolates or other goods.

State and federal legislation still prohibit retail sales, with the exception of some restrictions pertaining to therapeutic or medicinal usage. Therefore, although legalization and rising acceptability may be observed in some places, the legal purchase of psilocybin chocolate is limited to specified controlled medical situations and is now only accessible in Oregon and may soon expand to Colorado. Since local laws are always changing, always make sure to check the most recent versions.

Here are some key areas where psilocybin has seen changes in legal status:

  1. Oregon: In November 2020, Oregon passed Measure 109, which allows the regulated medical use of psilocybin under specific conditions. This means that licensed facilities can administer psilocybin in a controlled, therapeutic setting. 2. Colorado: In November 2022, Colorado passed Proposition 122, which decriminalizes personal use and possession of psilocybin for adults 21 and older. It also creates a regulated framework for the medical use of psilocybin.
